Day Six: Do You Hear What I Hear?

Reflection

In 1962, a musical composer by the name of Noël Regney was asked to compose a new Christmas song. Initially, he wasn’t that interested. He was pretty tired of all the commercialism surrounding Christmas, and he didn't want to add to the mix. But after thinking about it and observing political tensions running very high around the world, he saw it as an opportunity.

What better time than this to remind the world of the message of Jesus, he thought. But to show the message of Jesus—that God wanted to bring peace to humankind—Regney didn’t want to leave anyone out. After all, this message was for everyone… from the poorest and weakest to the richest and most powerful. Everyone should hear about it.

In the song, you even see (well, hear) that play out. The message starts with the wind, goes to the lamb, who tells a shepherd, who tells a king, who tells people everywhere. It’s a telephone game of sorts, but one that doesn’t get lost in translation. And the message about Jesus that Regney wanted everyone to know? Jesus is here, and he will bring us goodness and light.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, you do offer us goodness, even in a world where bad things happen. Help us shine your light of love, peace, and truth to the people around us. Amen.
